It’s Maid-O-Clock!

Our move to Green Hills is indeed a step up from what I used to be. In our previous apartment, Fil and I had all the privacy we need. We lived in an always dark yet pleasantly cool basement, and the place was usually messy because we did not have any outside help. We ate and cooked at whims, and our food was creatively simple – whatever we had in the fridge would do!

From just taking care of two humans (Fil and I) and three cats, I now feel responsible for seven humans (Fil, I, Mama, Elaine, Vincent, together with our maids — Emily and Bebot) as well as four cats! Living with a big group of people is something I need to get used to. The good thing about our current situation is that Vincent only comes home Friday and Saturday, and Elaine is about to study abroad very soon. After a few weeks of adjustment, I hope to start enjoying the art of homemaking.

Speaking of homemaking, I now try to cook and plan our meals. Aside from that, I leave the rest to our maids. I feel like an overworked Donya.  Good thing Elaine lent me her book called the Maid Manual. In it are useful tips on how to run a smooth household. I learned how to do a thorough schedule for our house staff with the help of this book!

The book even recommended that we create a list of rules for them. That’s what I also did.

  1. Salary will be given every last day of the month
  2. Bawal magsampay ng labahan sa labas from 2pm to 6pm, Mondays to Fridays
  3. Use washing machine for Jeans, t-shirts, linens, curtains
  4. Hand wash underwear, blouse, polo, slacks, dresses
  5. Downy is for our clothes only. If you want to use, you have to buy your own
  6. use brush when washing/cleaning the basahan
  7. You can watch TV during breakfast, lunch and evenings. Bawal ang TV from 9am to 12, and 2pm to 6pm.
  8. Alternate day-off during Sundays
  9. Lock the front and back doors at night, when you throw away the trash
  10. turn off all the lights and electric fan when not in use
  11. Answer the phone with “RHYME LAB, HELLO?” from 9am to 6pm, Mondays to Fridays
  12. Do not mix the chairs from room to room: red chairs for outside, white chairs for kitchen, square for room 1, round for room 2 and 3, blue chairs with sandalan for all teachers
  13. Ask permission
  14. keep the screens closed at all times
  15. Ask questions to clarify if you are not sure
  16. Take down messages if there are visitors or callers
  17. Follow daily schedule, and magtulungan sa mga gawain
  18. Pag may nakitang batang makulit at nangingi-alam, isumbong sa yaya or sa amin
  19. Bawal umakyat ang students sa taas, or pumasok sa stockroom and teacher’s room
  20. tawaging “teacher” ang mga teachers

I wonder how they will react to these things when I show it to them tomorrow? I hope they will abide with it. I feel blessed to have Emily and Bebot in our household. And I thank Pastor Asser Padrillan for introducing them to us. I just hope that they will be happy with our family and will be willing to work for years.

Here are the schedule and special task lists in picture form:
